GEO — Google Maps and Local SEO
Rank in the top three for "near me" searches. Google Business Profile optimization and regional content work.
Someone searching "near me" on their phone sees the top three businesses on the map. We work to get you into that three: we organize your business page, add your photos and help you collect reviews.
If you provide a local service, your rank on Google Maps can be more valuable than your website's ranking. The box of three businesses at the top of results (the "map pack") takes the bulk of clicks. GEO work aims to get into those three boxes.
What determines local ranking?
Google looks at three things: proximity, relevance and prominence. We can't change proximity; but relevance and prominence are fully doable.
Relevance — filling the profile correctly
The primary category choice alone can be decisive enough to change ranking. The service list, description, hours, service areas and product fields are filled completely; all written in line with target searches.
Prominence — reviews and consistency
Review count and the words within reviews directly affect local ranking. We set up a flow to collect reviews from your customers regularly and reply to every one. We also make sure your business name, address and phone (NAP) are written identically everywhere online — inconsistency makes Google hesitate.
Regional landing pages
For each district you serve, we build separate pages that genuinely carry content about that area. Duplicating the same text with only the district name changed is treated as low-value by Google; we add area-specific information, references and Q&A to each page.
Measurement
We track monthly the searches, direction requests, phone taps and website clicks coming from your business profile dashboard, and report which search term people found you with.
Adding and registering your business on Google Maps
If your business isn't on the map yet, the first step is to create and verify a Google Business Profile. During registration we:
- Choose the business name, primary category and additional categories
- Enter the address or service area (businesses that travel to their customers can hide their address)
- Add the phone number, website and business hours
- Complete the verification step Google requires
- Upload the logo, cover and business photos
Google decides the verification method; we follow the process from start to finish.
Common Google Maps SEO mistakes
- Adding keywords to the business name: It violates Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
- Multiple profiles for the same business: It splits ranking; duplicate profiles are merged or removed.
- Wrong primary category: A category that doesn't match the searched service keeps the profile out of relevant searches.
- Unanswered reviews: An unanswered review costs trust just as much as a negative one.
- Outdated information: If a changed phone number, a new address or public holiday hours aren't updated on the profile, customers are turned away at the door.
How do you get more Google Maps reviews?
The way to get more Google Maps reviews is to send satisfied customers a review link that opens with a single tap, right after the job is done. Asking for reviews is allowed; offering a discount or a gift in exchange for a review is against Google’s policies.
Google Business Profile offers a share link that opens the review screen directly. We place this link at the following points:
- The SMS or WhatsApp message sent after the service
- A small card with a QR code at the till, on the table or in the waiting area
- The bottom line of the invoice email and the appointment reminder message
The timing of the request determines the result. The moment a customer expresses satisfaction is a better moment than the next day. We prepare a short script showing your team how to phrase the request, so it comes across as natural and consistent.
A negative review gets a calm, short reply that offers a solution. Google only removes reviews that violate its policies (insults, fake accounts, irrelevant content); a review is not deleted simply because it is negative.
Replies to reviews directly affect the trust of customers reading the profile. Naturally mentioning the service the customer talked about shows other readers what you do well. Copy-and-paste thank-you messages, on the other hand, leave readers with an impression of indifference; we write every reply specifically for the review.
A sudden jump in the number of reviews followed by silence does not look natural either. A steady weekly flow of reviews creates a more trustworthy picture for both Google and the customers reading the profile.
Google Maps ads or Maps SEO?
Advertising on Google Maps gives you visibility straight away but stops when the budget runs out; Maps SEO starts more slowly but builds lasting rankings. In highly competitive areas, the two are run together.
Maps ads work by linking the Business Profile to the Google Ads account as a location asset. The ad appears in map results and in the local business listing within search results with a “Sponsored” label, and is charged per click.
| Criterion | Maps ads | Maps SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Speed of visibility | Starts once the campaign is approved | Grows as the profile and reviews get stronger |
| Cost structure | Paid per click | Clicks are free; it takes effort and time |
| Durability | Visibility ends when the budget stops | Continues as long as it is maintained |
A newly opened business can collect enquiries through ads in the first months while building up its profile and reviews. As organic visibility settles in, the ad budget is narrowed down to the most competitive searches.
How well Maps ads perform also depends on the quality of the profile. Someone who arrives via an ad at a profile with few photos, weak reviews and missing opening hours may turn to a competitor after clicking. That is why we fix the profile’s basic gaps before advertising. We also track calls, direction requests and phone clicks from ads separately from the profile insights.
Managing Google Business Profiles for multi-location businesses
A separate Google Business Profile is created for each location, and each one is verified with its own address, phone number and opening hours. You cannot add more than one address to a single profile; trying to combine locations in one profile weakens rankings.
As the number of locations grows, managing profiles one by one gets harder. That is why we group the profiles under a business group and assign team permissions per location. This way a branch manager can reply to their own profile’s reviews, while head office can monitor all profiles together.
- Naming: the profile name should be the real name on the signage; a branch distinction is only included in the name if it also appears on the sign.
- Phone: each location uses its own line; if the same central call number is used on every profile, Google struggles to tell the locations apart.
- Website link: each profile points to the page for that location, not to the site’s home page.
- Photos: each location’s own exterior, interior and team photos are uploaded.
If a location opening, closure or move is not updated on the profile in time, the old address stays on the map. We plan these changes in advance and reflect them on the profile the same day.
AI-powered search answers also use Business Profile information, reviews and the location pages on your website for local recommendations. Having each location’s details exactly the same on the profile, the website and other directories is necessary both for map rankings and for the right location to be recommended in these answers.
