Getting into the top three on Google Maps: a local SEO guide

Getting into the top three on Google Maps: a local SEO guide

If you provide a local service, the three boxes in the map pack can be more valuable than your website's ranking. We explain, step by step, what you need to do to get into those boxes.

In searches like "dental clinic near me", "Kadıköy auto service", "Ankara lawyer", Google places a map and three businesses at the very top of the results. This is called the map pack, and these three boxes take the bulk of the clicks. The good news: getting in here is often easier than reaching the top three in organic ranking.

What does Google look at locally?

Google declares three criteria: proximity, relevance and prominence. Proximity relates to the user's location and is not under your control. But the other two are entirely doable.

1. Choose the primary category correctly

This alone can be influential enough to change ranking. Choosing "Dentist" instead of "Dental clinic" determines from the start which searches you appear in. Look at which category your competitors use, and choose the primary category according to your highest-revenue service. Add the others as secondary categories.

2. Fill the profile completely

Every field left blank is a missing signal. Fill in the following fully:

  • Business description (naturally including target searches)
  • Service list — each service as a separate item
  • Working hours and holidays
  • Service areas
  • Products section (service businesses can use it too)
  • Attributes: wheelchair access, parking, appointment requirement, etc.

3. Add photos, add them regularly

Businesses that regularly add photos to their profile receive more direction requests. Use real premises and work photos, not stock images. Add them a few times a month; a steady flow works better than uploading 50 at once and leaving it.

4. Collect reviews and reply to all of them

The number of reviews and the words within them directly affect local ranking. When asking a customer for a review, guide them to naturally use the service name. Reply to every review that comes in — including the negative ones. A calm, solution-offering reply to a negative review is often more effective than ten positive reviews.

Warning: Don't buy fake reviews. When Google detects this, it doesn't just delete the reviews; it can suspend the entire profile.

5. Ensure NAP consistency

Your business name, address and phone (NAP) must be written identically everywhere online. Even differences like "St." vs "Street", "No:5" vs "No 5" make Google hesitate. Use the same format on your site, your social media profiles and directory sites.

6. Share business posts

Sharing a weekly post through the profile shows the profile is active and, by taking up extra space in the search result, increases your click-through rate.

How long until you see results?

Once profile gaps are filled, the first movement is usually seen within 2–6 weeks. In competitive areas, reaching the top three can take a few months along with the accumulation of reviews. Patient, steady work gives better results than one-off big moves.

The right and wrong way to collect reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest levers of local ranking, but also the area where the most mistakes are made. The method that works is this: as soon as the service is finished, at the moment satisfaction is freshest, send the review link directly. As days pass, the rate of leaving a review drops rapidly.

What not to do is clear: giving a discount or gift in exchange for a review is against Google's rules. Entering reviews back-to-back from a single device, or repeating the same text with different accounts, are also detectable behaviors. When such a signal is received, the reviews aren't just deleted; the profile can be suspended, and recovering it can take months.

Photos have a function beyond ranking

Adding photos keeps the profile alive, but their real effect is seen in the click decision. When three businesses are listed side by side, the one with real premises photos looks noticeably more trustworthy than the others. Interior, exterior, team and work results — have all four types present.

Service area or address?

If the customer comes to you, you should show an address. If you go to the customer (plumbing, cleaning, mobile service), hiding the address and defining a service area is the right thing. Mixing the two — for example showing a home address as the business address — causes both verification problems and ranking from the wrong location.

The site and the profile supporting each other

The map profile doesn't work alone; it needs to be consistent with the information on your site. Having the address written on your site, a map on the contact page and local content (area-specific service pages) increases the profile's strength. On the other hand, producing copy-of-each-other pages for every district backfires.

Frequently asked questions

I have a profile but I never appear on the map.

First make sure verification is complete; unverified profiles aren't listed. Then check the category choice and whether the business name matches the real signage. Adding a keyword to the name (like "Best Kadıköy Dental Clinic") is a reason for suspension.

My competitor is ahead with fewer reviews than me. Why?

The proximity criterion varies by the user's location; if the searcher is closer to them, they come out ahead. Also, category match and profile completeness matter. Reviews alone are not decisive.

I have more than one branch, is one profile enough?

No. A separate profile is needed for each physically separate and separately operating branch. Otherwise you won't appear at all in the areas where the branches are located.
