There are three ways to get a website: a site builder, a ready-made theme, or custom design and custom software. We compare them on cost, speed, SEO, flexibility and ownership, and explain which suits which business.
Once you decide to get a website built, the first question you face is this: should you start with a ready-made solution or have a custom site built? Most of the large gaps between quotes come from this choice. In this article we compare the three main routes, site builders, ready-made themes, and custom design or custom software, on cost, speed, search engine friendliness, flexibility and ownership, and explain which one suits which business.
Three routes: site builder, ready-made theme, custom design
Site builders (subscription platforms)
These are platforms with a drag-and-drop editor, paid for with a monthly or yearly subscription; there are options for both corporate sites and e-commerce. You get started quickly, no technical knowledge is needed, and hosting and security updates are handled by the platform. On the other hand, you can only customize as far as the platform allows, moving the site elsewhere is often impossible once you cancel the subscription, and some platforms also take a commission on every sale.
Ready-made theme
This means installing a purchased, ready-made design on a content management system (most commonly WordPress). The upfront cost is low and plenty of plugins can add functionality. The trouble usually appears over time: to suit every possible use, themes ship with lots of code and features you never use; the more plugins you add, the slower the site gets; updates can conflict with each other; and security holes call for regular maintenance. The design, too, was made not for you but for thousands of businesses.
Custom design and custom software
The site’s design and page flow are built from scratch around your business and your customers; the code contains only the structure you need. The upfront cost and timeline are higher, but page speed, the mobile experience and the search engine foundations can be done right from the start, and the site can grow along with your business. “Custom software” usually goes one step further, describing functions a standard site does not have, such as bookings, a dealer portal, quote calculators or company-specific workflows.
Template website vs custom design: the differences
| Criterion | Site builder / ready-made theme | Custom design / custom software |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low | Higher |
| Time to launch | Days | Weeks |
| Design | Within the template’s limits | Shaped around your business and customers |
| Page speed | Can slow down with unused code and plugins | Only the code that is needed; speed is a goal from day one |
| SEO foundations | Basic, via plugins | Structured data, URL structure and speed planned from the start |
| Custom functions | If a plugin exists and is compatible | Developed to your needs |
| Maintenance and security | Dependent on plugin and theme updates | Fewer external dependencies |
| Portability | Usually difficult with site builders | The code and data are yours |
The table shows a general tendency: a well-built ready-made theme can be fast too, and a poorly written custom site can be slow. The real difference is who has control over these outcomes.
Which option suits which business?
- Site builder: For businesses just starting out, with a very tight budget, whose site will only serve as a digital business card, or for anyone who wants to test an idea quickly.
- Ready-made theme: For businesses that manage their own content, have someone who can take on technical maintenance, and do not expect much differentiation in design.
- Custom design: For businesses that expect enquiries, appointments or sales from their site, compete with rivals on Google, and care about page speed and how their brand looks.
- Custom software: When you need a business-specific workflow that a standard site cannot handle (such as dealer orders, price calculation or appointment management).
Do not compare costs on the first invoice alone
A ready-made solution has a low first invoice, but the total cost reveals itself over a few years: monthly subscriptions, paid plugins, theme licence renewals, visitors lost to a slow site, and the cost of fixing updates that break things. With a custom site the initial investment is higher, but there is little dependence on subscriptions and plugins. Compare total cost over at least two or three years. We explain the items that determine website prices in detail in our article on website prices.
How does AGO build websites?
At AGO we build sites with custom design, without ready-made themes. As of October 2026, our web design packages are 14.990 ₺ for a corporate site and 29.990 ₺ for an e-commerce site (VAT included, one-off). Both include a fast, mobile-first infrastructure, SEO foundations, an admin panel and training, and 1 year of technical support. The domain and hosting are registered in your name and remain your property. Corporate sites usually take 3–5 weeks, e-commerce projects 6–10 weeks.
If you need a function specific to your business, we discuss it separately at the quote stage; and when a standard site is enough, we say so openly.
Frequently asked questions
Will my site built on a ready-made theme not show up on Google?
It can show up. Google does not look at how a site was built, but at its speed, content, technical foundations and trustworthiness. However, improving speed and technical foundations is harder on a theme weighed down by lots of plugins.
If I move my existing template site to a custom site, will I lose my rankings?
Not if it is done properly. 301 redirects are set up from the old URLs to the new ones and the content is preserved. For details, see our article on not losing SEO when redesigning a website.
Can I edit the content of a custom-designed site myself?
Yes. Text, images, menus and SEO fields are edited from the admin panel; we provide training at handover.
How do I know which option is right for me?
Tell us what you expect from the site, your budget and your timeline in the quote form; we will tell you openly which route suits you, without recommending a custom site if you do not need one.
